This adults-only event is stuffed with demos, drinks, talks and a dash of digital media that will make you think differently about taxidermy – an art form that takes years to learn and even longer to master. You’ll also be able to learn why Museums still collect in the 21st century and explore shifting attitudes towards taxidermy.
Food and drink is available for purchase on the night, or walk to nearby Fitzroy and check out some great eateries.
Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 concession/MV members – buy tickets here or call 131102 and join the Facebook event .
Giveaway! Thanks to Melbourne Museum I have 3 x double passes to give away to attend Smartbar on Thursday 20 August 6-9:30pm.

A family friend had his pet rabbit stuffed when it died from Mixi. So creepy.
A stuffed squirrel sitting on a toilet
Why a toilet? It’s kind of a pedestal I guess.
I saw a lion posed as a kitten in bed at work! Though I do work at a museum like place . 😛
A stuffed Mongoose eating a stuffed snake !!!!
Yikes!
A friend of mine introduced me to Crappy Taxidermy: http://crappytaxidermy.com/
There are some hideously memorable examples of very poor taxidermy, be warned!
Thanks for the link, this made me laugh!
I saw a stuffed cow with two heads once. So creepy!
What?? Why would you attach a second head to a stuffed cow?
Elk.
Ohhh I saw a fake human skeleton riding a real taxidermy chicken at a taxidermy place in san fran. Definitely memorable.
Oh wow! This I’ve got to see.
A shockingly bad deceased pet dog
The Bodyworlds exhibition was both terrifying and amazing at the same time
Yes I remember seeing that exhibition too. So strange to think they were once real human beings.
The entire room of stuffed animals at Melbourne Museum. Seeing it for the first time, through the glass window, looking down, as you head towards the entry door. It’s breath taking.
One of my favourite parts of the museum!
I saw a documentary on taxidermy, my favourite part was the man who turned his cat into a remote control quad-copter.
OMG that’s unbelievable (but also a functional use for a dead cat I guess)!
I still have nightmares after seeing a propped up stuffed duck. Triggering of torturous childhood memories much?!
Not strictly taxidermy, but I did a glassblowing workshop and a girl in the group brought along the ashes of her pet dog, mixed them in with the molten glass and made a slightly lopsided paperweight out of him. It was half heartwarming, half disconcerting, especially when she kept referring to the cooling piece as “Jessie”.
Haha this made me laugh!
