The Age Good Food Month Night Noodle Market is a pop up food night market open for just 2 weeks until Sunday 29 November for Good Food Month.
It is centrepiece of the month-long food festival and a much anticipated event.
I have to say in previous years I’d avoided attending the markets after hearing numerous reports of massive crowds, long lines, a lack of seating and stalls running out of food.
These issues seemed to have been ironed out this year. The market spans over three large areas in and above Birrarung Marr, with twinkling lights designating each spot.
There are more food stalls than ever (fifty-six) and three bars. On the night I visited (Thursday) there were only very short lines and plenty of food, despite it being a balmy evening and opening night. There was plenty of seating and the grassy mound overlooking the Yarra River was a popular picnic spot.
The Night Noodle Market features some of Melbourne’s (and some of Sydney’s) favourite Asian eateries, such as Charlie Dumpling, Roll’d, Din Tai Fung, plus some stalls offering special edition Asian-influenced dishes, such as Gelato Messina.
I was invited to sample some of the dishes as well as purchasing my own selection and I recommend:
The pork belly buns with pineapple achar and sriracha mayo from Charlie Dumpling…
The samurai-sword style sticky chicken teriyaki skewers by Daniel San…
Coconut water tapioca, passionfruit cream, lime powder noodles, peanut praline by Red Spice Road ($6)…
…And ice cream by Gelato Messina, who have worked together with Wonderbao to create bao-tastic ice cream sandwiches, a fancy deep-fried ice cream and gold bullion bars with Asian flavours. Here’s my Bao Chicka Bao Bao ($12) deep fried gua bao filled with peanut gelato, dipped in milk chocolate sauce and rolled in crushed peanuts.
You can plan and salivate over the full market menu here.
As the evenings get lighter and the weather hotter, the Night Noodle Market is a festive place for eating and drinking well while enjoying the riverside prettiness that sunny Melbourne does so well. It’s a great place for after work dinner, a date, to hang out with friends on a weekend or with your family. Of course to beat the crowds try to go early and on a weeknight.
