It’s adjacent to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Parkville and the popular Royal Park Nature Play playground and takes its name from the two founding doctors of original Melbourne Children’s Hospital – Williams Smith and John Singleton.
The restaurant is actually not easy to spot from the road, despite its floor to ceiling windows. Maybe it’s because you’re not expecting a dining option that’s not a food court next to the hospital.
During our visit on a weekday lunch time it was pretty quiet, mostly with business meetings and people who seemed to be visitors of the hospital. The dining room is spacious with plenty of seating options, from intimate booths to bar stools and long communal tables. The decor is bright and lively, belying its location.
There’s an extensive breakfast and lunch menu with familiar dishes done with a ‘cheffy’ twist. For lunch we tried a wood-fired ‘Original’ margherita pizza ($16.90). The base was a little bit hard and ‘biscuity’ for my taste – I like my pizza bases elastic and pliable.
I had the Vietnamese chicken salad with cabbage, carrot, celery and Asian herbs ($15.90). I liked the fresh crunchiness of the salad but didn’t enjoy the sticky, overly sweet sauce which liberally dressed the slaw – I would have preferred it on the side.
There is a takeaway menu of sandwiches, pizzas, salads and sweet treats and complete meals plus in-room dining for guests of Larwill Studio Hotel. Smith and Singleton signature blend comes from Hawthorn’s Axil Coffee Roasters. If you’re after something alcoholic there’s a full drinks list including cocktails.
Smith and Singleton is an all day 7 day a week dining venue, which makes it an appealing alternative to a vending machine or fast food chain which are really the only other options in the immediate area. If you’re visiting the Royal Children’s Hospital or the Royal Park Nature Play playground and need a bite to eat (or a toilet) then it’s a great option.
